Corbulo in Holland aka Netherlands and his Eastern Campaigns

 Salvete Omnes,

I would like to bring to your attention  an equestrian sculpture of the once famous ancient Roman general popularly known as Corbulo (Gnaeus Domitius Corbulo), who has been commemorated in Holland alias Netherlands with this monument that has combined modern representational art and ancient Roman equestrian statue tradition. The occasion for the construction of this monument at Voorburg was of the particular historic event, i.e., the construction of a canal - Fossa Corbulonis -  between the rivers  Rhine and Meuse by Corbulo's legionaries. Albert Termote was the author of this equestrian masterpiece.

In the ancient history, especially in the Tacitus' Annales  our canal builder and quite successful Roman general Corbulo is famous for his role in the War in the East 58-63AD  or the rivalry between Nero's Empire and the Parthian Great King(s) for supremacy in Armenia - nota bene this rivalry is well described in the article prof. Edward Dabrowa -  via academia.edu.
You can easily access researcher dr Leonardo Gregoratti's article tittled Corbulo versus Vologases: A Geme of Chess for Armenia.

Via Jstor you could get more but older scholarship - Corbulo's Campaigns in the East: An Analysis of Tacitus' Account

Nowa ksiazka Radka Sikory

 Salvete Omnes,

[in Polish]

właśnie otrzymałem najnowszą książkę Radosława Sikory -  Niezwykłe Bitwy i Szarże Husarii - Wydawnictwo Znak.

Vivat rekonstrukcja historyczna!!

R. Fabbri and Cricus Maximus

 Salvete Omnes,

Having taken a short break from the XVII century Polish-Turkish  wars and horse tribulations I decided to read a novel of the magnificent European and Mediterranean past i.e., the ancient Rome.
There are many writers on the UK and USA sides of the genre, and since I have not yet received the newest one by Harry Sidebottom so I picked  one novel  by Robert Fabbri titled Vespasian, Tribune of Rome. Vespasian takes place during the reign of the princeps Tiberius and his family and his praetorian prefect Sejanus' rule in the capital, involves our main characters getting pulled into many schemes and machinations of then Roman elites. The world depicted in the novel is of passions, warrior-craft, brutality, hot tempers, slaves and pitiless slavery, punishment and pain, suffering, intrigue, quest for power and even love and obviously hatred  - you can read the biography of Vespasianus on Wikipedia and you will get the idea what the potential for a good adventurous novel his life had and this novel may have. The hero is young, perhaps too wise for his years, but then he had to grow up fast and furiously if he wants to survive this ride - yep, there is lots of riding too.
And Swiss-UK author, Robert Fabbri,. delivers the story in his epic style and with dramatic attention to minutiae. Ergo, we, a reader, get a fine epic story, with clearly described heroes and villains and without judgement on their actions. The sidekick from Sabura one Magnus is a gem too.

So I finished it in no time, it was enjoyable and entertaining, and among its scenes and places there is a long sequence devoted to the chariot race  in the famous Circus Maximus of Rome. The scene at the races is important for the book in general and for the characters in the story, and from what I know about the actual Vespasian most likely  important for the whole 9 novel series (I am gearing up to read the 2nd one in the series).
I could say that if you have an itching to read some ancient Roman history novel this one is quite good.

Last year I posted this entry about Roman chariots and horse, and here I would like to add some more images in the series on this subject - the ancient Roman horse and its environment.

on Academia there are many articles, eg -
Sinclair Bell - The Costume of the Roman Charioteer -
Virgil at the races -

The Circus and the Cosmopolis -

a painting of imaginary race at the Circus Maximus  by Viviano Codazzi and Domenico Gargiulo - from my favorite XVII century

Rudomina eques polonus - rotmistrz & jego brat

 Salvete Omnes,

[in Polish]

wokół Chocimia i wielkiej wojny 1621AD -

W toku walk chorągiew Rudominy poniosła znaczne straty (opisane w poezji z epoki, w diariuszach, i w opracowaniach np Radosława Sikory), min. poległ brat rotmistrza Jerzy.

 Salvete Omnes,

[in Polish]

od dawien dawna załączam nieco informacji o pracach i osobie Konstantego Mariana Górskiego - i dzisiaj znów przypomnę te postać wielką i cnotami historyka wspaniałą.

A przypominam postać pana pułkownika w osobnym wypisie, bo chce skorzystać z okazji i zamieścić link do wideo na YT, gdzie imć pan Jacek Bartosiak (Strategy & Future) udostępnił na swoim kanale YT krotką prelekcje o trylogii Górskiego, tj - Historia Jazdy, Piechoty i Artylerii Polskiej. Ostatnio linkowałem pana Jacka rozmowy z innym panem Jackiem, tj.

Columbus 12.X.1492 - 2021AD - the Americas' horses

 Salvete omnes,

today is the actual day admiral Cristobal Colon (Columbus) and his armada reached Bahamas, and on the 28th they reached Cuba. Acting on behalf of Isabel of Castilla and her husband Fernando II of Aragon, the Spanish admiral brought his small fleet to the New World and the rest is history, including the history of the horse of the Americas.

Whereas it is immaterial whether he was Genovese (native of Genoa, Italy - nota bene the Republic had been one of the principal slavers in the Black Sea and Mediterranean Sea regions, dealing mostly in Slavic and other Christian slaves sold onto the Spanish and South Italian markets ) or Spanish, or Portuguese; it is very interesting that with his voyages begins the history of Eurasian and North African horses in the Americas.

In order to add some illustrations I am using some of the Theodor  de Bry's works of the much later period (and this prolific printmaker had been instrumental in the illustrating and spreading of the so called Spanish Black Legend or la Leyenda Negra, including Las Casas' accounts and pamphlets etc).

What many might have omitted in their story of the horse in the Americas is that those three beautiful Caribbean island - Cuba, Jamaica, and Santo Domingo homes to the Taino Indians were the primary horse breeding centers for the conquista of the Americas during the very  late  XV and first half of the XVI centuries.  I am not sure whether Puerto Rico was part of this breeding program at that time?
