Markham on Stallions, Amblers et al

Salvete Omnes,

once upon a time in the early XVII century there was this English horse-writers Gervase Markham (died in 1637AD) -

and being a gentleman, hoseman,  and a horse soldier he wrote a lot, after his career in the wars of his era, putting  his horse-related experiences to paper.

Thus from his book  The perfect horse-man. Or the experienced secrets of Mr. Markhams fifty years practice.,  1671 edition, there come these pages - on stallions and mares(he mentions Neapolitan, Turk, Spaniard, Barbary, Englis, Dutch, French or German[horses] and a Polish - as Polander - horse for breeding in England) and ambling among many other advice and observations.

You can read a copy at the Archive Library or google books or some other digital collection library out there. The pages I selected come from the Archive digital copy.

Benjamin Marshall & blood horses

Salvete Omnes,

it is the beginning of our new month of August, sort of a dead center of the summer season in the Northern Hemisphere.
I have been looking at the British painters of the past, since I always seek the equestrian art and artists, looking at their ways of showing horses and their world.

One of these old artists to definitely look at is Benjamin Marshall (1768-1835) - there is a gallery in the Wiki Commons, so no trouble to seek out this master of equestrian art - who came after the great Subbs. so I am adding here several of his horse painting and prints, just to kick off the new month, and to enjoy some great equestrian art -

ps
since I like to read historical fiction I have just discovered this writer  - Zoe Saaida - she writes about the pre-Columbian America, and is an author of historical fiction et al., soI am eager to read her books, as the articles on her website are encouraging and the Goodreads website contains many good reviews.
enjoy your summer...

Upton the Uhlan & Arabians, Barbs and Turks in the English Blood Horse

Salvete Omnes,

a quick entry-
long time ago an Uhlan from Her Majesty Cavalry Roger D. Upton (1827-81AD) wrote a book titled:
Newmarket & Arabia - examining imported  racers and courses used to create the fabulous English Thoroughbred, and this fine book is available 'libre; at the Archive - world's best library.

eg list of 'Oriental' horses used in the English Blood horse breeding from the time of king James until 1800AD (according to major Upton):

We will return to our Uhlan in the future, as he did more of riding and writing on the Arabian horse.
