Happy 4th of July, America & remembering Klushino 1610AD

 Salvete Omnes,

today is the 4th - Happy Forth to all

ps

and today, but in 1610AD Polish Crown army under hetman Stanislaw Zolkiewski completely defeated Muscovite army commanded by Dmitry Shuisky and Jacob de la Gardie. Road to Moscow, the capital was opened, and the Poles took completely over the Russian capital in September 1610AD.

or roughly 3000 Polish soldiers, mostly Polish winged hussar lancers, vs 18,0000 ( 3,300 Western European mercenaries and 15,000 Muscovite soldiers) tsar's army  plus 20-30,000 camp followers. (lots of nonsense in the Polish and English Wikipedia articles )

Web archive article in English about the battle - pdf form.

Klushino 1610

 Salvete Omnes,

precisely yesterday but in AD 1610 Polish Crown grand hetman Stanislaw Zolkiewski leading a small but chosen army defeated the Muscovite army near the village of Klushino.

It was a grand victory... and led to some momentous changes in Eastern Europe.
Today I was looking at the Wiki Commons- Sigismund III Vasa gallery and became pleasantly surprised to 'discover' this image - attributed to Monogrammist ASL and showing our king victorious with Smolensk in the background.

this well  known print (made after the lost Tommaso Dolabella painting) :

...
some details from the drawing:
winged hussar

Old Polish Kozak cavalry

winged hussars banner
Rotameister or  a captain of Polish hajduk infantry or a field commander ordering infantry to action [I 'mirrored' the detail from the original drawing ]

Muscovy Horses of early 17th century - Captain Margeret

Salvete Omnes,

Jacques Margeret was a Huguenot mercenary who served in Muscovy (Grand Duchy of Muscovy) starting with tsar Boris Godunov,  tsar Dimitrii Ivanovich, and tsar Vasilii Shuiskii, and being a partner? confidante? of Mikhail Saltykov Glebovich  went over to the Polish side, thus serving with the Polish Crown and our King Sigismund III's army.

Captain Margeret, while in Polish service,  participated with distinction in the battle of Kluszino, He left Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth circa 1612, eventually settled in Germanies, becoming a confidante and consultant to several rulers and magnates of Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and German states, and by 1619 disappeared from the pages of history.

While in France after the death of Dimitri I, he wrote a very interesting account on the Muscovite state, and in his work  he also described horses of the Grand Duchy of Lithuanian, thus we can read about the Muscovite Russian (eg of Vologda) ,Nogai Tatar, Polish and Turkish horses in this work (English translation titled "The Russian Empire and Grand Duchy of Muscovy" ).
I compiled the pertinent pages from Gallica - French National Library - the French original

and two images containing  the old Muscovite Russian saddles

Arabian Horse DNA study

Salvete Omnes,

the new month- :) , interesting battle anniversaries eg Kluszyn/Klushino 1610, Grunwald 1410 etc.
....in the realm of the genetic studies a new study has been made available - Genome Diversity and the Origin of the Arabian Horse.
The Nature brings this article in their scientific reports section - with multiple authors and geographicly spread out samples.

It has some puzzling conclusions going against the lore of the Arabian and English Thoroughbred mutual relationship. Namely, the Arabian horse had very little to do with the racing lines of the English blood horse, but there are Thoroughbreds in the modern Arabian lines[sic!].

and yet another genetic study article, on the Persian Arabians and their relationship to other Iranian breeds.
valete!
