Johann Moritz Rugendas in South America

April is coming to its natural end in two days. The war in the Western Asia has not been concluded, more war in Africa ( Mali, Somalia), and the usual Ukraine invasion in Europe.

Johann Mortiz Rugendas, a Bavarian painter, came from the family of artists (painters  eg his great grandfather of famous Georg Philip Rugendas) from Augsburg (Kingdom of Bavaria). He studied with Albrecht Adam and Lorenzo Quaglio II.
He made several long trips to the Americas, departing for Europe in 1846 after more that a decade in the Americas. 

Native horsemen of the pampas,  their enemies the  gauchos, huasos, tropeiros, criollo horses, Mexican caballeros and many other equestrian subjects in Latin America.

American Voyage to Buenos Aires, 1817-8 - gauchos, torros and Indians

a quick lope to Buenos Aires - H.M. Breckenridge was sent to Buenos Aires in 1817 (via the Portuguese colony of Brasil) - his observations were published in London, in 1820. 

Author made many quick observations  while visiting the capital, Buenos Aires -

El dia del Gaucho & Emeric Essex Vidal's gauchos, circa 1818AD

a gaucho hunting, interesting war bridle on the horse - noleadoras in action

today in Argentina they celebrate the day of gaucho - El Dial del Gaucho.
Vivat gauchos and the gaucho tradition -

 and enjoy some watercolors painted by a British officer Emeric Essex Vidal(1791-1861) in Argentina's coast and Uruguay during 1816-1818.

The watercolors were published in a book form in London  in 1820. You can peruse them via Hathi Trust site or Archive world library.
