Winged Hussar Companion from Lapanow ca. 1652AD

it has been some time since I posted anything related to the winged hussar.

One of my friends, Damian Loj, sent me this link to an epitaph from Lapanow's church of Saint Bartholomew the Apostle (founded in 1529 by Mikolaj Lapka, and rebuilt in 1614 by judge (iudex castri) Marcin of Lutoslaw Lutoslawski).

The Lapanow Parish was an affluent one in the end of the XVI century,  consisting of the following villages - Lapanow, Lutomierz, Kepanow, Grab, Boczow, Brzozowa, Ubrzez, Kobylec, Wola Wieruska, Janiszowka, Wolica and Wola Grabska. There were three church patrons - Hieronim Lapka, Stanislaw Lubomirski ,Druzyna coat of arms, and Jan Dabrowski (1596).

The stone plaque depicts a pious winged hussar companion Marcin Lapka (1599-1652). Lapka's wife Marianna Lipska from Lipia had the epitaph carved circa 1652. The plaque was mounted on the outside of the church and only in 2012 was moved into the church. The linked site says that the archives from 1748 noted four such epitaphs existing at that time, unfortunately only two survived the winds of times, albeit the second one from 1666AD contains only the lower part of the epitaph. The second epitaph, Andrzej Werbski Pilawa coat of arms,  was also funded by his wife Magdalena nee Lyszkowska  and their children.

The plaque also contains the winged hussar's coat of arm - in my opinion it is Szreniawa, 

and not a Druzyna (also called Szreniwa bez Krzyza - Szreniawa without a Cross), as they declare on the website linked above. But on the other hand, Druzyna is part of Szreniawa lore, and some historians, following Jan Dlugosz  consider Druzyna to have been the original coat of arms out of which the Szreniawa developed or originated. Bartosz Paprocki, the author of the monumental Polish heraldry, listed the Lapka family as both Szreniawa and Druzyna (circa 1543), later writers like Niesiecki and Boniecki say that Lapka were of Druzyna coat of arms.

Lapanow has also a very unusual monument to the farmer peasants killed, 5 killed and 10 gravely wounded protesters,  by the government's forces on June 5, 1932,  which makes this column a symbol of our Polish peasant farmers struggle for the peasant rights during the 2nd Polish Republic.

8th of September is also the anniversary of the 2nd battle of Orsza(Orsha) - a huge  and victorious battle for the Polish-Lithuanian realm against the Muscovy ( the Orsha battle was won but the war did not result in recovering Smolensk, the gateway to Lithuanian Duchy).

Winged hussars with lances - some illustrations

the month of February 2024 is ending, winter coming to an end and Novruz will come running. 

The wars are not ending unfortunately, there are no leadership in the West to stop the mayhem.
and European farmers, the core of that land, went to wage big protest war against the elites and their lackeys, who are in denial of biology and photosynthesis  - Godspeed to the farmers!

I am going to end this month with some of my illustrations showing long lances of our winged hussars - some older and some newer illustrations.

Winged Hussar and other images from the Book of friends

Book of friends -  or more properly Johann Joachim Prack von Asch's liber amicorum was a compilation of entries spanning 1587-1612AD, including the period of the so called Long War (thanks to Bruno Mugnai I have the 2-volume book  on the said war  ), with the paper coming from the ancient paper bazar in Constantinople. Joachim Prack von Asch from was a Hapsburg diplomat, who  traveled between Constantinople,  the capital of  Ottoman Empire and  Bohemia and other lands of his emperor, Rudolph II Hapsburg.

The Book of Friends is available either on the Getty Digital Collections site or on Archive - world's library - and from its pages come this gouache miniature showing a winged hussar killing his lancer adversary, a Turkish Ottoman lancer.

the Christian winged hussar is on the left - piercing with his hussar lance the throat of the Ottoman sipahi or perhaps the elite Deli lancer.

The winged huusar has a large wing on his left side, clearly visible shield, a shishak helmet with three feathers, a leopard pelt on his shoulder, short zupan, red close-fitting breeches, yellow boots with long spurs, under his thigh he carries a hussar war-hammer with pick (nadziak) - he is a picture-perfect winged hussar of the period, be it in Polish realms or the Hungarian lands.  His sorrel horse is caparisoned with an animal pelt, the bridle is with a curb-bit , reins and headstall without any visible adornments .
His Ottoman adversary has a shield,  tall Ottoman shishak with a wing on its front,  he has  some armor(perhaps mail), loose-fitting sharavari (Turkish salvar, from Persian sharavara) pants, a kilij sabre and a koncerz (estoc), also  a painted lance with lance apple.  His gray horse is caparisoned with a long textile fringed shabraque,  his bridle is ornate and sumptuous, at the throatlatch there is a long horse bunczuk(Turkish tug),

Hungarian Hussars from Esztergom

there is a group on Facebook titled 'Szlafrokow Romowy' (for reenactors , historians, and aficionados interested in the Old Poland and her neighbours costumes and attires) and Tomasz Rejf, one of the members of the group and an avid XVII century reenactor and researcher, has provided this link to the British Museum scan of a drawing (pen and ink, and watercolor) by Jacob Hoefnagel, Flemish artist, showing the vista of the Hungarian city of Esztergom circa 1595AD.

In that picture, in the right hand corner there are three hussars or lancers astride fine prancing horses and with all that finery that made Hungarian and Polish winged  hussars so picturesque, each with a different hussar lance.

[zaznaczam a priori to nie reklama!]
Wydawnictwo Znak wydało właśnie imć Radkowi Sikorze książkę o naszej najsłynniejszej jeździe, owych strasznych wrogom kopijnikach epoki staropolskiej czyli o husarii.
O samym wydaniu książki pisałem na blogu parę dni temu.

Jak już pisałem zrobiłem do tej książki rekonstrukcję-grafikę z pocztem 3konnym plus wydawnictwo wzięło ode mnie pewną liczbę  już wykonanych starszych moich rysunków a grafik, co jest kroplą w morzu ikonografii tego dzieła, jako że praca jest bardzo bogato ilustrowana, choć głownie zdjęciami rekonstruktorów, obrazów, rycin i obiektów etc autorstwa Marka Kalisinskiego i Radoslawa Szleszynskiego. Tutaj z smutkiem dodam, że   książce nie ma spisu ilustracji[sic!].

Ciekawi mnie czy ktoś z badaczy et fascynatów wojskowości staropolskiej dokona czy planuje dokonać recenzji tej pracy?

 Dlaczego pytam?

Pytam o recenzje dlatego, że IMHO jest to książka, która w swym zamyśle i wykonaniu a sposobie prezentacji tematyki historii et splendorów husarii celuje w zajęcie czołowego miejsca wśród już wydanych publikacji typu 'całościowego'  lub 'przekrojowego' o naszej husarii, być może pozostawiając w tyle takie dzieła jak ospreyowy 'Husarz' imć Brzezińskiego, 'nieśmiertelna' ''Husaria'' mości panów Cichowskiego i Szulczyńskiego, czy śliczna 'Husaria polska' prof. Żygulskiego jr. etc.
