Pieter Coecke van Aelst - Customs and Manners of the Turks

Suleiman the Magnificent 

the XVI century Flemish architect and artist (see the list of his mastery) Pieter Coecke van Aelst  produced a freeze-like series of 10 prints titled - Ces Moeurs et fachons de faire de Turcz (Customs and Fashions of the Turks)  - circa 1550sAD.

The prints are very pleasing  esthetically and show maestry of composition, anatomy and knowledge of proportions etc, they are also very precise in detail and contain a wealth of information about the Ottomans and their empire.

Three world preeminent art centers- London's British Museum, NYC Metropolitan Museum and Amsterdam's Rijks Museum possess at least three different sets of these prints.

Stammbuch Andreas Huber - Cod.Don.899

a short entry to this extraordinary Stammbuch of Andreas Huber - a mix of gouaches and woodcuts (of Jost Amman's workshop) from  1584 or the last quarter  of the XVI century. Held at the Württembergische Landesbibliothek Stuttgart (FR of Germany)- follow this  this link.

Mythical figures on horseback - Jost Amman

this image makes a very interesting idea for a watercolor or drawing

Long time ago I posted some woodcuts from  meister Jost Amman's workshop. They were depicting horse care and everyday grooms and horse handlers & drivers.
Today, different but very interesting woodcuts from Jost Amman - including depictions of Mars, Aurora & Apollo.

Orsza 1514 - a 1515AD woodcut

so yet another anniversary of 9-11 -  in the link my old post about my experiences that day - pacem aeternam to all the victims 

a quick return to the Orsza battle and victory over the Muscovy ..

 so probably the very first image of the battle appeared in 1515AD in printed  poem written by Andrzej Krzycki, Kotwicz coat of arms, who was queen Barbara Zapolya secretary, Ad Divum Sigismundum Poloniae regem et Magnum Ducem Lithuaniae semper invictum post partam de Moskis victoriam Andree Krziczki inclite coniugis sue Cancelarii carmen, Kraków 1515, 

the printer was Jan Haller and they published  this poem in Krakow, then the capital of the Polish state.

House of Savoy I

Salvete Omnes,

another quick post of more than several future posts dedicated to the equestrian portrayals of  some members of the House of Savoy, an Italian dynasty that is still going on today. Among other deeds and actions they were crusaders during the Age of Crusades - here I always refer you to Helen Schrader, who researches the Outremer  and writes both non-fiction and  'awfully' engaging novels about their history. 

The Savoyards claimed titles to the Kingdom of Jerusalem, Kingdom of Cyprus, and Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia.

We will start with  some heraldry as evidenced in their medieval seals and one miniature - the dynasty was founded by Humbertus I who ruled in the County of Savoy, then a state within the Holly Roman Empire.
