Wings and horsemen from a German master

 Salvete Omnes,

Killing of children of Niobe

last night, looking at some German painters from the XVI and early XVII century I came across a painting by Johann Konig (Kreis). Master Johann was born in Nuremberg in 1586AD and died there in 1642AD.

Meister Johann painted in oils on copper panels, the technique allowed for very precise detail in oil paints etc -

according to Wiki Commons, this painting showing Christ's Passion was sold at Sotheby's London in 2010

Do watch Mel Gibson's 'The Passion of the Christ' this weekend if you are a Christian or just love great powerful cinema.
Mel Gibson is supposedly going to start shooting another movie - the Resurrection .

ps
today is also the anniversary of the Polish Crown, i.e., the coronation of Boleslaw I (Boleslaus) the Great/Brave in Gniezno, then the capital of Polish kingdom, in the year 1025AD.

Missale et horae ad usum Fratrum Minorum - Passion of Christ - Gallica

 Salvete Omnes,

in the spirit of the incoming Easter holiday  - and do pray for peace in Ukraine and to stop to the killing of Slavic Christians there..

Ad rem,
here we have another  great example of medieval manuscript illumination with exquisitely painted Passion of Christ - Missale et horae ad usum Fratrum Minorum -  from French National Library digital collections.

The Roman missal here  is a work of  Italian painter (perhaps authored  three manuscripts at Gallica)  and scribe/s who delivered this XIV century luxurious missal  -

Passion of Christ from Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry

 Salvete Omnes,

Tres Riches Heures du Duc de Berry - French XV century manuscript is a veritable treasure chest of beautiful imagery and symbolism done in the most exquisite style and with outstanding artistic skill and talent.

But since we are in the Holy Week - La Semana Santa - so I have collected the  Passion of Christ  illuminations from this Late Medieval book of hours or a collection of prayers unified in a book form for praying the canonical hours.

interesting rider ,on the right, in the foreground - he is riding a la jineta/gineta, short, and has rowel spurs, a big curb-bit on a gray horse
