Polish Saddle from Livrustkammaren

long time (10 years) ago I posted these photos of saddles from the Swedish museal collections.
Now, the Statens Historiska Museer has more information, along with a color photo, about this beautifully ornamented saddle and a horse shabraq that went with this horse outfit(suit).

Polish saddle from Livrustkannaren circa AD 1605

another unusual XVII century Polish saddle, this time from Livrustkammaren Museum in Stockholm, Sweden.

From the museum description:

Sadel med fram och bakbommar av ben med rikliga graveringar föreställande bl a riddare, hundar och andra djur. Hög, rundad sadelknapp, på utsidan försedd med staden Danzigs vapen, på insidan årtalet "1605", det sistnämnda möjligen senare ingraverat.

Sits av grönt kläde med gula tvärgående sömmar. Kåpor, stödbommar samt frambommens insida av rött kläde. Skinnapplikationer på kåporna i form av turkiskt bladmönster. Foder och kantskoning av läder. Kåpornas form något nedhängande samt bredare nertill.

Bakbom med två högt uppstående rundade sittblad. På sittbladens baksida riddare till häst med en hund och fågel i förgrunden. Längs med bakbommens sidor jagande hundar, hjortar och harar. Frambommens båda sidor med två moderiktigt klädda herrar i fokus. Insidan av sadelknappen dekorerad med orientalisk krigare till häst beväpnad med javelin.

Stomme på undersidan beklädd med näver. Två remmar med sölja för fäste av förbygel. Fyra sadelgjordsstroppar. Rester av läderögla framför frambommen.

Uppges i Livrustkammarens inventarium 1748 ha tillhört Karl X Gustav.

Seat of green cloth with yellow transverse seams. Covers, support bars and the inside of the front bar made of red cloth. Leather applications on the covers in the form of a Turkish leaf pattern. Back bar with two high rounded seat leaves. On the back of the seat leaves a knight on horseback with a dog and bird in the foreground. Along the sides of the back bar hunting dogs, deer and hares. Both sides of the front bar with two fashionably dressed gentlemen in focus. The inside of the saddle button decorated with an oriental warrior on horseback armed with a javelin.

Frame on the underside covered with birch bark. Two straps with buckle for attachment of stirrup. Four girth straps. Remains of leather loop in front of the front bar.

Stated in the Livrustkammaren inventory of 1748 to have belonged to Charles X Gustav.]

this saddle represents the very eclectic world of the Old Poland saddle making, especially  the northern provinces of the Kingdom.

Polish saddle and sword - XVII century from MET

the new AD 2025 has taken off quite nicely for the Americans with the new POTUS - America, I  do hope for thee & for me -:) .

ad rem, great American museum MET has two Old Polish items - sword and saddle - on digital display.
They are both unusual as they belong to the parade type, richly adorned and made with highest skill and mastery by the respective artisans. 

first, the saddle - H. 18 1/2 in. (47 cm); L. 22 1/4 in. (56.5 cm); W. 22 3/4 in. (57.8 cm); Wt. 11 lbs. (5 kg) - I wonder about the dating - AD 1664. It seem very late for this type of saddle. There is a seemingly similar saddle in Sweden, taken as trophy from Polish Commonwealth during the Deluge. 

the horn, very Mexican, has an image of a hunter? or soldier in a Western dress

there may be a coat of arms under the horn plate, inside the horn, of the city of Gdansk

a nice lancer - perhaps a Polish winged hussar with a lance

the sabre /saber with scabbard ('pochwa' in Polish) and carrying belt ('Rapcie' in Polish)- associated with the Saxon court and perhaps with our king Augustus the Strong. Very splendid horseman's weapon.

Mikolaj Hieronim Sieniawski, Leliwa Coat of Arms

National Museum in Krakow has been digitalizing their collections - so I decided to corral some items associated with Mikolaj Hieronim Sieniawski, Leliwa coat of arms, who was a Field Crown Hetman during the reign of Jan III, and participated as a commander in many battles of this period, dying in present day Slovakia during the return of the Commonwealth armies to Poland from the 1683 Vienna campaign.
