Embarking cavalry - horse sea transport crica 1793

and Christmas has and gone - lots of joy and merriment , and good food. We should have more Christmases, shouldn't we?

ad rem, on Wiki Commons there is this painting - 

The scene shows embarkation of the cavalry troop onto the British navy ships  - they are going for war on the continent, the willing European powers coalition against the French revolutionary armies in Flanders and Netherlands etc.

it shows clearly horsemen of the English armies of the period - namely, one of the light dragoons unit (some of these regiment would become hussars or lancers during the XIX century reforms in United Kingdom. in the decade after the American Revolution the cavalry regiments of Britain His Royal Majesty army supposedly suffered a period of decline and mishandling. And thus such cavalry entered the Wars of French Revolution, and this embarkation shows one of several boardings by the British cavalry brigades - the dragoon  troops from 7th,11th, 15th, 16th and 17th Light Dragoons  formed the 3rd brigade(there were 2 more brigades composed of the King's Guard units) commanded by Major-General Ralph Dundas (of the 11th Light Dragoons).

 

Note they are wearing the dragoon helmet with fur crest and flashy plume, known then simply as Tarleton.

Vrancx' forlorn rider

March is upon us - time flies. I had some hard disc problem, just had to buy a new SSD, the old new one is kaput, along with the entire content, including my digital sketches - c'est la vie...
So to start with this month, I want to share a detail from a painting by Sebastian Vrancx & Jan Breughel II showing a horseman being shot by a bandit or a marauding soldier.

This forlorn rider's horse, a powerful gray mount, is fully outfitted in accordance with the period tack - a long-shanked curb bit with a single set of reins, a breastplate and a crouper. The tack has additional adornments in a form of leather straps hanging from the crouper right behind the Baroque saddle. Note that the rider is mounted with long, with heavy metal stirrups.
There is a horseman's bag (German der Mantelsack) - a form of a saddle bag - strapped behind the cantle, better seen on the bay horse held by a bandit in the background. Horse is shod on all four hooves,

dzisiaj znów w języku ojczystym :)
Obracając się wokoło spraw końskich i kawaleryjskich pozwolę sobie załączyć 'skany' z ciekawego choć całkiem starożytnego, bo sprzed 80 laty, artykułu mości pana Stanisława Gepnera, (biogram na Wikipedia jak i w linkach podanych) o czaprakach jazdy naszej od XVIII wieku do roku 1831, opublikowany w czasopiśmie 'Barwa i Broń', 1934, no7.

  Pan Stanisław, kawalerzysta imperialnej armii Rosyjii i rotmistrz Wojska Polskiego - 20 pułk ułanów, żołnierz Armii Krajowej, muzealnik i rysownik,  był ogromnie poważanym badaczem munduru i uzbrojenia Wojska Polskiego.
Mam szereg artykułów mości pana  i pewnie nieraz będę do niego powracał na łamach tego blogu.
Nota bene, po 50 latach od czasu zakończenia prac nad dziełem, dopiero w AD 2014 wyszedł był album ichmościów Stanisława Gepnera i  Antoniego Trzeszczykowskiego pt ''Żołnierz polski Ubiór,uzbrojenie i oporządzenie Okres 1832 -1939''  - rekomendowany tutaj. Niestety, niedostępny w sprzedaży, chyba że via antykwariaty i allegro etc..
