more dog days of the summer - so a nice Monday with a painting by America's favorite Western artist - Charles Marion Russell. 
The subject here is a shaman or medicine man,

Charley Russell as illustrator - from The Uphill Climb

as I have been saying over the years I am a fan of maestro Russell's brushes through and through (and inks and pencils etc).
I peruse the Archive World Library pretty often and with much 'mucho gusto.' 
So today a little entry about his plates from the book title The Uphill Climb- a western novel by a 'real westerner' Bertha Muzzy Sinclair aka B. M. Bower (one of the most prolific writers of the Old West ) published in 1918.

I have not read the book (I may listen to it, nota bene there is a large Librivox library of Ms Bower's novels) , I just enjoy the plates in their black and white (and their variety of  grays) glory - :) 

Russell's illustrations are full of authenticity and minute details representing the life of the cowboys and ranchers of the era. I wonder if the color paintings of these plates exist?

a very fine Polish historian passed away yesterday - rather young prof. Jaroslaw Centek of Torun University History Department - pacem aeternam.

and my quick post of today, I was able to 'corral' some better quality scans of the plates  :
Charley Russell had drawn these  illustrations  for newspaper stories  published in various American daily newspapers, and The Cheely-Raban Syndicate published  a 14 stories in a book titled 'Back-Trailing on the Old Frontiers' in Montana, 1922. Book is available on Archive world library for reading and download.

Ghost Horse - Charley Russell's story from Trails Plowed Under

from great American maestro Charles M. Russell's tales and story telling comes this story of  the Crows and ghost horse (published in his book - Trails Plowed Under, available on Archive), where a horse named Paint (and alter Monty) is the protagonist of the story.
