Franz Roubaud - Caucasus equestrian

Franz Roubaud - when young a disciple and later member  of Jozef Brandt's circle of painters in Munich, Bavarian Kingdom - was a prolific Russian painter.
Perhaps most famous for his Borodino 1812 Panorama project, he was a prolific equestrian painter, especially painting the Caucasus Mountains region and the ancient peoples who lived and fought and bred horses there.

From Wiki Commons gallery we can get good quality images of maestro Roubaud's canvases depicting the horse people of the most mysterious mountains that divide Asia and Europe in the south.

Vernet , a few prints

going along nicely in this month of December as good things are starting to happen in the goode olde US of A.
So, perhaps a few prints by a French master Carle Vernet or more properly  Antoine Charles Horace Vernet but known as Carle- active during the late Ancient Regime  through Napoleonic Age and Restoration (died 1836). Carle was an avid horseman, and excelled in horse drawing, painting and equestrian print making. He came from a family of artists, his father Joseph Vernet being the first master of brushes among them.

so, I corralled a few prints here:

Maestro Carle was the father of the famous genre and equestrian painter Horace, and teacher of many painters of the era.

via Szlafrokow Rozmowy group and its members comes yet another interesting visual  collection called a stambuch, a virtual treasure from the European early modern period - Stammbuch Johann Michael Weckherlin - that contains tons of hand drawn and painted coats of arms, portraits and illuminations from German lands drawn between 1500s-1600sAD.

San Martin by Blasco de Granen (1422-1459)

as you may recall, dear web traveler, I like to 'corral'  images of Saint  Martin of Tours, and I got this new Saint Martin for  today - the Feast of Saint Nicolas

from Iglesia de San Martin in a town of Las Penas de Riglos, Huesc, old Kingdom of Aragon,  comes a painting by an Aragonese painter Plasco de Granen (1422-1459).

the last month of this 2021 Ad has started - 

 

and I think time has come to spend some time with the very round anniversary that we had this year, i.e., the Spanish-Tlaxcaltecan conquest of the Triple Alliance of  Mexicas (in popular parlance known as the Aztec Empire) and their vast and rich empire.. Awesome murals on the Tlaxcaltecan history in the city of Tlaxcala, Mexico.
 

I could start with the horses Cortes' 'legion' brought from Cuba landing in the American continent near present day Vera Cruz, Mexico(properly la Villa Rica de Vera Cruz). Yep, Cuba's green meadows and spaces were the true motherlands of the American horse in the XVI century Western Hemisphere.

But let us start,(and there will be lots of links in this thread,a s Spanish and Mexican and other scholars mad plenty of most interesting presentations on the conquest of Mexica ),  with a link to a presentation by a historian Carlos Martinez Shaw, via Fundacion Juan March, titled The True story of Herman Cortes (in Spanish with subtitles).
why starting with Cortes, well, without Hernan and later his lover and companion La Malinche aka dona Marina there would be a different story, and with don Hernan, somewhat a student of Latin and law from the Valladolid and Salamanca Universities begins the most epic conquest in the last 500 years, done from horseback and with a lance and sword, firearms and crossbows, and other meas of war. Cortes was one the most talented and astute military commanders in the history of the art of war, and only because of the political correctness and other shenanigans he is presented as odious, hateful, racist and despicable  amoral character etc... 

It would be an injustice to not to provide a link to the story, complex as it may be, of the most famous or infamous woman in the history of indigenous Americas  la Malinche, Malintzin, as presented by  Dr Margo Glantz,  In English, hmm., I can suggest this presentation from the heartland of the Olmec/Popolucan native Veracruzans, a bit different but interesting.

Also, I will link other presentations and lectures from  the CEHM Fundación Carlos Slim - perhaps adding a link on La Malinche with the presentation by dr Andrea Martínez Baracs about the Tlaxcaltecas and their relationship with Cortes.

Note that already a 100 years ago one researcher and horseman Cunninghame Graham wrote profusely about the Age of Conquest, including his fine work  titled the Horses of Conquest - dedicated to the horses of this military conquest. And I will using this work and quoting from it too.

Yuan equestrian art - ceramics

snowy and frosty winter out there - I guess it must be the fabled global warming in the Northern Hemisphere.

as you may have read here I enjoy the long Chinese history, and I read and watch about that history as much as I can.
The Yuans awere particular in many respects, and their art is part of the greater Chinese art heritage, as it was  the fusion of many elements that came to a happy fruition: the steppe patrons and their expectations, steppe artists and Han Chinese artisans, who all together  gave raise to the Yuan Dynasty art.
We should note here that  this foreign Chingizid Borjigin dynasty upon conquering various states and empires across the  land unified the  entire China for the first time since the demise Tang Dynasty.
