Muscovy Horses of early 17th century - Captain Margeret

Salvete Omnes,

Jacques Margeret was a Huguenot mercenary who served in Muscovy (Grand Duchy of Muscovy) starting with tsar Boris Godunov,  tsar Dimitrii Ivanovich, and tsar Vasilii Shuiskii, and being a partner? confidante? of Mikhail Saltykov Glebovich  went over to the Polish side, thus serving with the Polish Crown and our King Sigismund III's army.

Captain Margeret, while in Polish service,  participated with distinction in the battle of Kluszino, He left Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth circa 1612, eventually settled in Germanies, becoming a confidante and consultant to several rulers and magnates of Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and German states, and by 1619 disappeared from the pages of history.

While in France after the death of Dimitri I, he wrote a very interesting account on the Muscovite state, and in his work  he also described horses of the Grand Duchy of Lithuanian, thus we can read about the Muscovite Russian (eg of Vologda) ,Nogai Tatar, Polish and Turkish horses in this work (English translation titled "The Russian Empire and Grand Duchy of Muscovy" ).
I compiled the pertinent pages from Gallica - French National Library - the French original

and two images containing  the old Muscovite Russian saddles

Ulani W Meksyku

 Salvete Omnes,

Horses of Aniello Falcone

 Salvete Omnes,

Canicula or dog days of the summer are upon us - so back to some fine art history and here we go:
Aniello Falcone(1600-1656) a disciple of Jose de Ribera, Neapolitan epic painter of war and heroic epic stories. he painted extraordinarily precise and fabulous war horses. Presumably of his region, i.e., southern Italy, while he himself was a fighting man too, took part in the rebellion against the Spanish rule.

I wonder if these are Neapolitan horses ?

Certainly they are of proper size and even epitomize war horses of better breeding, perhaps thoses of the Italian peninsula but also perhaps of the North African Berber types and African Muslin breeding?

Vergilius Vaticanus

Salve,
The Vatican Apostolic Library has digitalized one of two oldest surviving Late Antique manuscripts - which contains parts of the Virgil's works collection (originally the manuscript might have contained the entire Aeneid, Georgics, and Ecolgues) - nice Wiki page in French. Publius Vergilius Maro(70BC-19BC)- Roman poet writing in the Homeric epic traditions - if you have studied Latin or planing to study it, then  Vergilius' works may be part of the study and enjoyment of the Latin literature.

I have corralled some horses and riders from the manuscript - end of IV century AD Romans and their mythical history.

the entrance to the Elysian Fields

Roman imperial imagery - Trojans and king Latinus on the throne

the other Roman manuscript held at the Vatican Library is the so called Vergilius Romanu - here a scholarly article on this late Roman manuscript.
Nota bene, two  libre books, from my most favorite museum - MET, The Age of Spirituality - a catalogue of exhibit held at the MET in 1977-78 season; and the collection of articles of The Age of Spirituality, A Symposium. So if you wondering about the Late Rome and her art etc , then these works provide  rather easy access to 'pre-end of history' scholarship and commentary.
