Robin Hood - the Outlaw

 Salvete Omnes,

this month I have revisited the American legend of Zorro, so perhaps a quick gallop to the British Isles and the tale of Robin Hood or Robin of Locksley, the famous outlaw of Sherwood Forest, Lady Marian and his Merry Band.

Robin or Robertus (Robert?)

the image above, from Wiki Commons,   a XV century print showing allegedly Robin Hood on horseback - sweet to have survived.

Robin and Marian

The Outlaws of Medieval England - a pdf from University of  Hawaii. And a  net article on the real outlaws of medieval England. More about the outlaws in medieval England and Iceland, legends and lore.

About the sorry life of the outlaws - a short description from this ballad ( English XV century poetry) and a painting by Joseph Edward Southall .

'The snow, the frost, the rain,

The Cold, the heat, for dry or wete,

We must Lodge on the plain,

And, us above, no other roof,

But a brake bush or twain (The Nut Brown Maid, 172-176)

Another ballad here - Robin Hood and Guy of Gisborne

There are many videos on Robin (apart from fiction films) available on Yt - eg Chronicle - Medieval History Documentaries  or Robin Hood, Sherwood Forest & stories from an English bowman (more from the reeanctor point of view). Or English writer Dan Davis' documentary on William of Cassingam.
We can also turn to trusty Academia - eg the whole book titled Robin Hood in Greenwood Stood - Alterity and Context in the English Outlaw Tradition, a collection of articles where there is one on the social context of late Medieval Archery. From Univeristy Federal do Rio de Janeiro comes article - The Adventures of Robin Hood: Legend, Cinema and History. And many, many more on Academia

In this link there is the list of movies and television productions about Robin Hood (I like many of them and  enjoyed  this tv series, because of the music by Clannad), and some illustrations from American etc books on the famous outlaw

J. Hoefnagel - la gineta lancers from Jerez de la Frontera

Salvete Omnes,

1560s Jerez de la Frontera by Anthonis van den Wijngaerde
a short entry on this May day - from Jerez de la Frontera in Spanish Kingdom.
Joris Hoefnagel (1542-1601AD) was a Flemish artist and frequent traveler in the XVI century.

He drew and printed many so called map (topographical) views of the cities of his era.

In these maps he recorded images of riders in various poses and actions - like these two lancers with the adarga shields on the Jerez de la Frontera's views.

they seem to be dressed in  Morisco style, or at least they are wearing a Morisco headgear, while horses' bridles are adorned with large feathers.

the pursuing lancer has a sabre while the pursued a sword
.

They are riding in the la jineta/a la gineta style

horses wear ornate halzbants with horse tugs in the Turkish style

Italian ecuyer and equestrian researcher Giovanni Batista Tomassini wrote this article about a la brida y a la jineta/gineta styles of riding in the XVI century.

Zorro - on Archive.org et al.,

 Salvete Omnes,

Don Diego de la Vega aka Zorro

a little off topic- a fictional American character of Zorro.  Zorro is a masked horseman riding a fabulous steed and vanquishing evil, greed and defending the poor, women and children...

The original 1924 book -  The Mark of Zorro. was originally serialized in five parts in issues of All-Story Weekly dated between August 9 and September 6, 1919. Filmed first in 1920 and again in 1940 as The Mark of Zorro and serialized for television in 1957 as Zorro by Walt Disney Productions.

Over 40 films have been made since 1920AD.  Many books and plays written, including comic books etc.

Douglas Fairbanks in Mask of Zorro (1920)

The Zorro-theme has been resurrected in Poland during the current presidential elections campaign, with the state police allegedly chasing a person dressed as Zorro and  exercising his right to free speech, guaranteed under the Polish constitution, during the political meeting in Tarnow, Poland-EU. Which led to a creation of many memes eg this one.

Ad rem, I do like very much all Zorro films and stories, enjoyed many novel and especially the 1940 American film with Tyrone Power,  the Italian 1975 film with Alain Delon, and the 1998 & 2005 American films - great equestrian scenes in all of them.

So I would like to point your wagons to Archive World Library where you can read and enjoy old Zorro comics... and novels and films...

ps Libribox has the audiobook - Mark of Zorro.
