Palio in Florence AD 1418

Salvete Omnes,
Medieval world  was the time of flowering of the European culture, while  in terms of arts the XV century with its abundant visual representations are simply some of the loveliest.
Perusing the Cleveland Museum of Arts website (I have a book on the Museums' arms collection) I came across some very interesting images, including this cassone - plural cassoni - (a large self-standing floor chest) by Giovanni Francesco Toscani (  c. 1380-1430 ), who described himself as painter of cassoni (cofanaio).
the subject of this panel is a Tuscan palio dei barberi (eg dissertation on palio) or race - horse race - in Florence during the feast of Saint John the Baptist in June AD 1418.

well, enjoy some of the images of competitors and their horses in a rather violent and dangerous display of medieval horsemanship -
so representing various city districts and riding bareback, with a strong nahajka ( Polish for a horse whip ) in hands and without mercy towards their competitors and their horses (injured and fallen horses), these young male riders pound towards the finish line where the city elders await them; while spectators, including many  fair hair maidens and ladies, good burghers, and monks and street urchins are lined along the course of this urban streets race.

caparisoned horses at the finish

Maestro Giovanni Francesco was a good painter of horses, conveying with his bold brush work the action and dangers of this spectacular city event.
His horses do not look like the heavier , more powerful knightly destriers but are slicker and fleeter than the famous and expensive war horses, perhaps they were bred for racing in the sunny Tuscan countryside or brought from the horse breeding areas of southern Italy ( although, the 'Barbero' (plural 'Barberi' ) means a Barb horse, from the breeders in North Africa).  No curb-bits seem to have been used on the race horses.

The description from their page:

Livrustkammaren collection in Stockholm.

and copied by a user, for convenient use in on-line translators.
The book consist of black & white pictures of the most important objects
that were either given to Swedish kings or became spoils of war
in 1655-1656 and 1702-1706, when Swedish army invaded Poland.

Please note, that the Stockholm Roll is no longer in Stockholm, as painting was returned by Olof Palme to Polish care and custody at the Warsaw Royal Castle in 1974.
For the last month or so the Rolka (Roll) had been on display  at the Royal Castle, but the exhibit closed yesterday.

The Horse show Cavaliada at Krakow saw a troop of the Polish Legion Uhlans presenting their cavalry drill  after the Austro-Hungarian regulations.
from the video description:

Cowboy Mounted Shooting

Salvete Omnes,
a short entry -
the Cowboy Mounted Shooting is a competitive sport event associated quite a bit with historical reeenactment of the XIX century American West and Western movies, being a spectacular  display of American Western Horsemanship and love and handling of firearms, thus requiring quite considerable amount of preparation of on the part of horse and rider.
This equestrian sport is becoming a popular activity, and events are spreading throughout the country, getting coverage on major sports channels etc.
They promote American history, horsemanship, love of the American Western traditions, knowledge of firearms and their handling, and the special horse-rider relationship - what a mixture one may say
Participants, both women and men, belong to the two major organizations:  Mounted Shooters of America or Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association.

I think I am going to give a try one day - :)

Polish Guard Lancers -new book

Salvete Omnes
it is my pleasure to announce a new English-language publication about the famous Polish horsemen of the Napoleonic era.
Namely,  this coming April the Winged Hussar Publishing LLC will release worldwide the completely new book about the famed Napoleonic Polish Guard Lancers - their uniforms, weapons, equipment and horse tack. It is the first publication about the Polish lancers of this type and of this scope and depth attempted in English language.

The book's author, pan George  Lubomski, is an independent researcher and long-time reenactor of the Polish Guard lancers from the United Kingdom, featured in past publications showing Napoleonic period soldiers. Because of pan George's command of English, Polish and French he was able to bridge the primary source gap when comes to various documents and memoirs, and previously written research on the subject.

Simon & Schuster and associated platforms (Amazon, Barnes & Noble) will be selling pan George's new opus magnum starting in April.

Please find  attached the new cover drawn by the author and three sample pages

Ancient horse head from Florence, Italy

Salvate omnes,
March is upon us, so to start this complicated month - end of the Winter, beginning of Spring via Spring Equinox, Nowruz etc - on a right leg, we shall turn to a representation of an ancient Greek horse (well, the head and neck what is left of a larger statute of a stallion and rider) from ancient Hellenic IV century BC  milieu - the Cavallo or Testa Medici Riccardi.
You can listen to a short audio presentation, and enjoy the photos from the National Archaeological Museum in Florence, Italy - via Wiki Commons.

they say this animated horse head was the inspiration for Donatello and Verrocchio...

Husaria - sketches -on Paczki Day

Salvete Omnes,
today is Fat Thursday and in Polish culture today one must eat pączki ( Polish doughnuts ) - :) more the better - like those in this picture.

... and also today the good month of Luty  (February) ends so to finish off this not a bad month I am sharing several reworked sketches or sketches in process of being reworked.

the theme is the famous Pastorius engraving showing a winged hussar with his lance lowered to strike and the end of his lance rests in the tok (lance boot) attached to the pommel of the saddle with a leather strap.

Nota bene my friend Radoslaw Sikora's book on husaria is selling well throughout Poland - being a bestseller.
