Siege of Brno Ad 1645

I really like Wikimedia Commons - you can find amazing images of great size, allowing one to study the image.
So, I was looking for some period - AD 1600-1650 - images of cuirassiers (heavy cavalry) and other Western European cavalry, especially during the 30th Years War.
To my surprise and delight I came across this large canvass  from the Brno City Museum.

The painting shows the 2nd siege of the Moravian capital by the huge Swedish army augmented by the Transylvanian soldiers of Prince George I Rakoczi that took place during the four months of AD 1645 .

The besieged city was heroically defended by the small contingent of professional soldiers and by the town burghers under the command of  Louis Raduit de Souches , a son of the French Huguenot emigre, who was to have a very distinguished career within the Imperial army. 

The defenders were helped by their faith, this being Roman Catholic creed, and we cna be certain that in the hearts and minds of the defenders not a small trust was placed in the holy Madonna from the Saint Thomas Church in Brno, one of the 'Black' Madonnas venerated in Polish (eg Black Madonna of Czestochowa) and Czech lands.

 At the moment I do not know much about the contents, i.e., the troops shown in this painting, but nevertheless I want to share it with you.
Slowly and with some difficulty I will read the Czech accounts (nota bene there is more of the painting in the article showing a Transylvanian cavalry unit with a banner) of this siege and perhaps learn more about the contents of the painting.

I think we are seeing the meeting of the Swedish commander, Lennart Torstenson, with a commander of the Transylvanian auxiliary contingent.

Cangrande della Scala - autopsy of a XIV century Italian knight

while researching  the equestrian statues from the Medieval period, mostly from the Italian states, I came across this very unusual article(in pdf) authored by Gino Fornaciari et al.  A different version of this study via academia.edu.
The article is a step by step presentation of the autopsy of the preserved 'mummy' of  the XIV century Veronese prince and knight Cangrande della Scala, who was a very active warrior , statesman and the Ghibeline League supporter - his last deed was to take Treviso, in Veneto, and if you traveling in Italy do visit, it is a lovely small city with good cuisine and nice people (visited last year).

Cangrande was immortalized in the Decamoron and the Divina Comedia, and in this funerary equestrian monument. 

The authors of this multidisciplinary study conclude that this warrior-prince (1,73 m tall, healthy and robust otherwise) was cut short (he was only 38 years old) as he was poisoned with foxglove aka digitalis plant ('naparstnica' in Polish), present in his system.

There are some figurines of Cangrande I della Scala done by the militrary modelists - [1] , [2]
giving a sens of the richness and beauty of his chivalrous appearance.

Diego Ventura & his horses video tribute

I am an admirer of the Iberian equestrian arts, including the art of el rejoneo or 'toreo a caballo' (bullfighting from horseback).

I came across this short but stunning video showing one of the modern masters of this equestrian martial art Diego Ventura and his partners, those being his brave Iberian horses.

Wikimedia Commons library  of el rejoneo - what a great display of unity of horse and rider, brave bulls and splendid horsemanship. 

Caution, it is about killing per se and therefore it is graphic, violent and  very real, and perhaps disturbing to many of you, hence make your own decision if you want to watch it.

Uhlans in Szczecin

Salve,

November 11 is the modern Polish Republic's Independence Day, and this year I went to a little celebration of this important day at the Szczecin Ducal Castle where inside the smaller courtyard, next to the entrance to the Castle Information, there is a cast plaque commemorating the 12th Podolian Uhlan Regiment.

 Reenactors, both male and female, from the Klub Kawaleryjski im. 12tego Pulku Ulanow ( 12th Podolian Uhlans Regiment Cavalry Club) came on horseback, and some even bearing lances,

 to salute and commemorate, and to lay flowers at the plaque.

Parthian Strongholds in Turkmenistan

Salve,
world is smouldering - and no caballero can stand by it, so let us remember the victims of the latest terrorists' attacks over Sinai, in Lebanon, Kenya, France et so on, the list goes on. Pacem aeternam to all victims and condolences to their families.
Just one side comment - in wake of these attacks usually respective governments take away ... the freedoms and liberties of their own citizens. Beware, for one of the American Founding Fathers and US President and  said ''Those who surrender freedom for security will not have, nor do they deserve, either one.'' - more quotes on Liberty.

I would like to link to this article written by prof. Marek Jan Olbrycht titled "Parthian Cities and Strongholds in Turkmenistan' - great article it is and a must to all interested in the Parthian and Central Asia civilization.

''Wspaniałe stulecie'' - wywiad

lubię czytać o historii Turcji osmańskiej, zwłaszcza aspekty związane ze sztukami walki, wojskowością,  sztukami pięknymi oraz  o koniach tureckich i jeździectwie Osmanów. Te tematy gościły już wiele razy na naszym blogu. Ale kwestie jeździectwa i koni we współczesnej Turcji nie były zbyt częstym tematem u nas. Niecodzienna produkcja filmowa zmieniła na chwilę ten trend.

Mianowicie telewizja turecka nakręciła serial historyczny zatytułowany 'Wspaniałe stulecie', na  kanwie dziejów Imperium Osmańskiego  podczas panowania słynnego sułtana osmańskiego Sulejmana zwanego Wspaniałym i jego żony Roksolany Hurrem.

Dla miłośników koni i jeździectwa ciekawym aspektem produkcji tego serialu jest udział polskich speców od jeździectwa filmowego pod wodza Mateusza Gieryna, znanego na świecie i nagradzanego na konkursach łuczniczych łucznika konnego i trenera koni, z którym można przeczytać sobie wywiad na blogu Styk kultur -  oto link.

Tczew AD 1627 - Dirschau

Kuba Pokojski, którego mam przyjemność znać z czasów rekonstrukcji bitwy pod Kłuszynem AD 2010,  napisał był prace magisterska którą następnie przekształcił w książkę, którą otrzymałem poczta w zeszłym miesiącu, poświęconą bitwie pod Tczewem. Książkę wydał Instytut Wydawniczy Erica,

Książkę mam w czytaniu - tj przeczytałem rozdział I(Opracowania i Źródła) i V (Bitwa pod Tczewem) oraz Bibliografię - tak, tak, rzuciłem się na rzeczy oczywiste, zwłaszcza że nowo-otrzymanych książek  mam sporo.

    Radek Sikora, Ph.D., napisał wstęp który zawiera krótkie studium rywalizacji miedzy królem Szwecji Gustawem Adolfem, Lwem Północy, a hetmanem koronnym Stanisławem Koniecpolskim zwanym 'Nacinaczem'.
Mam nadzieję napisać krótka recenzję po przeczytaniu książki.

Spotkanie z Kuba Pokojskim w Tczewie - część I.

I am reading a book by Kuba Pokojski on the battle of Tczew/Dirschau Ad 1627.
This is the first scholarly work to approach this important battle exclusively.
The book arose from studies and then a Master thesis presented by the author  as a part of the fulfillment of the Master Degree in History requirements.
Thus far I read the chapter one - critical study of the period sources and historical research already published, and the chapter devoted to the battle itself - 115 pages or so on the battle alone.

 The book also has an article-introduction by Radek Sikora, Ph.D., including a synopsis of the martial 'rivalry' between king Gustavus Adolphus and hetman Statnislaw Koniecpolski during this war, including the importance of hussaria in this struggle.

Once I will have finished the whole book I will write a review - :)

New Military History Magazine

Salve,

Bruno Mugnai, Florentine historical artists, became the editor of the new military history magazine  - History & Uniforms.
You can read the first issue, in English or Italian, and download the .pdf or .epub format.
I did enjoy the neolithic Chinese warriors and weaponry article by Chun L. Wang, where Bruno's illustrations are quite striking and artistically very pleasing.
The article on the army of Venice during the period of our  Lion of Lechistan (Jan III Sobieski) is a must for all interested in the Italian forces of the anti-Turkish Holy League (1684-99).

All Saints' Day 2015

tempus fugit and so, you and I are in the month of November - the Fall in full swing, so to speak.
In Poland the first day of November is all about the family, ancestors and cemeteries - decorating with memorial  wreaths, fresh and artificial flowers and ''znicze'' (grave candles) & candles...

In the Slavic traditions this was the time of Dziady and karaboszki, I wrote about this Slavic Halloween 3 years ago.

Two cemeteries are very important in our Polish myth and tradition, presently outside of Poland. One is the famous Cemetery of Eaglets in Lwow [Lviv] aka Leopolis, Ukraine - in spite of the symbolism this cemetery has been restored by the Polish workers, starting with the workers from Energopol under Jozef Bobrowski in 1989, and Polish money, and currently should be protected by the Ukrainian government. The cemetery is a huge tourist attraction in Lviv.

 and the Rossa Cemetery in Wilno [Vilnius], Lithuania.

Above, Rossa Cemetery , the funerary monument of Władysław Syrokomla aka Ludwik Kondratowicz, famous Polish writer and translator, author of the still popular children's song -Wlazł kotek na płotek 

 Nota bene,  a  little gem for reenactors - a documentary about the annual XVII reenactment event, Polish-Swedish war,  at the Ostromecko Estate, on the Vistula, near Bydgoszcz, in Kujawy Poland.  (film is in Polish).

Perhaps you could be a little Polish today and thus light your candle and spend some time thinking about your ancestors and people who in wars and daily struggles gave their lives for your family, country and homeland ...  after all today is ancestors' day.

a little forced break ...

I have been moving, or rather I have moved long distance and been sort of suspended in my move, therefore should resume regular blogging in November, or so I do hope.

I should be receiving shortly a new, for me at least, book by prof. Marek J. Olbrycht on the history of Parthian state during the turmoil of the  I century BC.

Also, Long Riders Guild gave a green light for a new Polish translation of Aime Tschiffely's book on his historic ride across South and North America. I am to receive this book and should be an interesting reading, since I have not read the first translation by Mieczyslaw Jaroslawski from the 1935 - info here.

So my blogging will have continue irregular until mid November.

Czytam ostatnio nowa powiesc pani Eli Cherezinskiej - Turniej Cieni - swietnie sie czyta, choc powiem mialem zupelnie inne wyobrazenie o mosci Chlopickim i jego dowodzeniu po Grochowem.

A tutaj wiersz mosci Pola - sliczny i wlasciwy na nasze czasy, mysle..

Cudze chwalicie, swego nie znacie,

Sami nie wiecie, co posiadacie.
