Condottiere - Horseman from Santa Anastasia , Verona - International Gothic

this evening we will canter quickly to Verona, where inside the Catholic church of Santa Anastasia there is a funerary monument to Cortesia Serego (1335-386AD), a condottiere captain in the Veronese army.

Cortesia II Sergo, his son, ordered the monument to be sculpted  by Pietro di Nicolo Lamberti and painted by Michele Giambono.

Paul Jean Gervais - two horses

 Salvete Omnes,

Paul Jean Gervais , French painter educated at the Art Academy of Toulouse and Beaux-Arts de Paris under Jean-Leaon Gerome and Gabriel Ferrier during the latr XIX century,   is not actually known for horses but beautiful female depictions.

So today  I would like to share with you his two horses from his painting, these works show exquisite control and command of the equine anatomy along with his fabulous painting mastery.

These paintings come from the Gervais Hall at the Capitole de Toulouse.

The need to remember - Charlie et al.

Saint George slaying the Evil dragon 

today is another anniversary of 9-11, already 14 years ago. The current tragic  events in American also need our attention, as there is a need to remember. We must slay the Evil dragons.

I remember the day mostly through imprinted in my memory images of burned and still smoldering paper bits,   those millions upon millions of snowflake-like office paper bits floating in the morning air, dimming the sunlight (it started as as a nice Indian Summer-like sunny day), settling on my jacket, hat, skin, pants and boots, as I walked from Manhattan Ave towards the shore of the northern Brooklyn Greenpoint & Williamsburg waterfront on the East River. 

And yesterday, September 10,  a good American, free speech advocate, defender of liberty and right to bodily integrity and choice,  defender of reason, family values and American Conservative, fine father and loving husband - Charlie Kirk - was murdered during his debate-meeting with the young college students  in Utah. He was the most promising young leader among the Conservative Americans... Someone robbed us and our children of a future leader and pathfinder.  So much sorrow...

And I still see the hidden-behind-the screen figure of a young Ukrainian woman, Iryna Zarutska, dying from  stab wounds, inflicted by a  racial hatred-filled black man,  slumped below her seat on the floor on a mass transit train in Charlotte, NC. 

She came for a better future than in Ukraine, and found horrible death. Her American dream never took of...  so sad.

 
Nobody came to her rescue, indifference  of her fellow straphangers was terribly unsettling. 

All these crimes pale  when compared with what horrific scale of mayhem is happening in the Holy Land, or the deaths in the Ruso-Ukrainian war.

Saint George & Saint Michael by Willem Vrelant et al.

I admire and cherish the XV century European art, especially the manuscript illuminations.
So tonight, with Christmas Eve just one day away, I would like to share with you these several closeups of the splendid illuminations by Willem Vrelant & his workshop - from Google Project on Wiki Commons.

a nobleman, presumably, hawking (full page) - the gray horse has a tail tied, beautiful blue tack and a noble steed appearance.

May the evil  be destroyed like the monsters lanced by the saintly knights  in these illuminations.

Hans Suess von Kulmbach - armored knights, horses, early hussar and stradiots lancers

a little canter to early XVI century Polish ream where Northern Renaissance art life flourished in the old capital, in and around the royal court of Sigimund I Jagiellon. 

Apart from Michal Lancz there was another early painter in Polish Kingdom who also painted early hussars, stradiots and Rac, and knights and saints.

Northern Renaissance painter Hans Suess von Kulmbach was a prolific painter and draughtsman. 

In the old Limbach's church, nowadays a Lutheran Church, there is a surviving altar with his painting showing four military saints in period plate and chain armor-  

During the period of 1509-15 he was active in Krakow (Cracow), but returned to Nuremberg, where he died in 1522AD. He painted figures that resemble Rac or stradiots of the period. 

and the Adoration of Magi, in full glory at the top of this post,  is a mine to be explored

There is a painting at the old town of Sandomierz - Diocesan Museum. Probably painted in master Hans Suess' workshop in Krakow. But it closely follows the original master Hans' work.  Again, Rac lancers, stradiots and perhaps even Tatars (in those felt or sheep-skin  conical hats) . My thanks to Radoslaw Sikora for allowing me to use his photo of the said painting.
