Keeokuk vel Keokuk - Sauk chief on horseback in full spendor

 Salvete Omnes,

chief Keeokuk vel Keokuk, who later in life called himself the 'man who has been everywhere,' was a principal leader of the pro-American goverment factions of the formerly Woodland Algonqian Sauk(Sacs) and Meskwaki (Foxes)tribes  and a chief antagonist of Black Hawk and his independent faction (the 1832 Black Hawk War and aftermath resolved the conflict within the Sacs & Foxes in Keokuk's favor).

George Catlin visited the notorious chief in his  Iowa home, and they met again during the Sauk chief's visit to the East Coast. Catlin drew the chief, his favorite wife and son (who became his successor when the chief died in Kansas 1848).

Also, he painted a famous painting of chief astride a fine warhorse - Keokuk was a note warrior and war leader, and

The photo of the painting comes from the Smithsonian.

We could say that Keokuk and his people did not prosper from pro-government stance  in their dealings with the Americans between 1804 and 1840s, finally ending in the so called Indian Territory in 1860s.
They had to fight another fight for their reservations in Kansas and Iowa in the 1950s and 1960s, surviving and winning that last fight for their tribal existence.

Buffalo vel bison hunting III - bison skinning or dressing - The Eastmans

 Salvete Omnes,

Seth Eastman's drawing engraved

the last chapter on hunting bison - the process of skinning of bison etc.
In this chapter Mary Eastman brings forth much more information from the colonial and frontier annals,

Mary ends the chapter the the ominous saying stated to her by 'an aged Indian' -'When there are no more buffaloes, there will be no more Indians.'

.

.

the illustration drawn by Seth provides some more detailed information on the equestrian, two grazing buffalo runners,  in the background -

they seem to be outfitted with the native saddles with stirrups and one horse has a bison hide blanket, while the 'flea-beaten gray' has more elaborate harness with a crouper. In some of the Eastman's paintings these  fringed croupers appear as well. The can be seen in the perido art - from George Catlin, Paul Kane, Bodmer, A.J. Miller or Rindisbacher.

Canadian Indians at the Stampede - old photos

 Salvete Omnes,

Great Plains People aka Plains Indians have been represented at the Calgary Stampede - they are mostly or entirely the Canadian Indians (they use the First Nations in their Canadian parlance) , but before they were Canadian they were just Plains People.. the border is an artificial separation of these nations of the Great Plains of North America.

at Wiki Commons and on Archive World Library there are photos of olden days, when some of the native participants had been active warriors during the horse riding and coup counting days of pre-reservation times.

Here are some photos, including from the 1960s Stampede pamphlets -

and one very beautiful representation of the Plains Indian horse mask and buffalo/bison horned 'helmet' and the remnants of horse armor in these breastplates
