Two Leggings - Crow warrior

a short post - in two days we will celebrate the Thanksgiving Day, with foods and merriment and some. 

long winter months are ahead of us, so from time to time I would like  to propose some reading for this dark period (in the Northern Hemisphere at least) .

I was looking thorough my books and one of them by prof. Peter Nabokov , with the foreword by John C. Ewers, popped out.
Namely, Two Leggings, The Making of a Crow Warrior. Great. great book about the bygone era of the American history as told by the participants - the Crow warriors.

 

This printed book  is  actually the  edited version of  William Wildschut's manuscript, compiled in Montana from meetings and talks & customary smokes with Two Leggings, his interpreters, and his fellow warrior friends between 1919-1923 

 You can borrow it from Archive World Library - I wonder if there is an audio book of this great historical work.

a quick entry showing equestrian portrait from the XVII century, German lands as there was no one Germany then, rather 'Germanies' then under the emperor and collectively known as the Holy Roman Empire.
So in this picture we have a chivalrous  prince Wolfgang Wilhelm, who was the groom from the wedding pictured in etchings by  Herr Zimmermann in Munich,  portrayed in a full equestrian plate armor, with a Marschallstab aka marshal baton .
The canvas was painted by a master from Rubens close circle of artists, named Deodat del Monte  ,

Let us take a closer look at his mount- 

 A palomino horse, perhaps a Spanish one. with a star a snip, and a sock on his left rear leg.

the head with a nice star and snip , while the bridle has a gilded curb-bit with longish shanks popular of this period

a Baroque Western saddle with a ornate 'horn'  - textile skirts 

horseshoes

gilded stirrups and spurs, a textile woven cinch visible

 and our  prince in the chisels of Abracham Hogenberg, German Kupferstecher .

If you ever in Dresden, ancient capital of Saxony, do check the castle where they display the most sumptuous XVII century saddles of the Saxon

Wespazjan Kochowski - Nagrobek Koniowi

Wespazjan Kochowski herbu Nieczuja gościł już na moim blogu -

a dzisiaj krótki wiersz mistrza barokowego pióra, który przecież był walecznym rycerzem sarmackim i obrońcą Ojczyzny epoki rebelii Chmielnickiego i Potopu a także stronnikiem marszałka Lubomirskiego stając min w bitwie pod Mątwami, który w tym wierszu nieco naśladuje mistrza Jana Kochanowskiego.

Tu pod tym słupem leży koń  łysocisawy
Jeżeli który zgodny do Marsowej sprawy.
Za fraszkę Bellerofont i Pegazus lotny,
Przeszedł  ich dzielny rumak, rączy i obrotny.
Namniej mu bieg, i praca, trudy nie szkodziły,
W potrzebach szczęścia pełen, na podjazdach siły.
Nakoniec tu dla pana swej miłości
Ochwatem zamorzony, martwe złożył kości.

Nota bene 'łysina' to albo łysina podługowata (ang. Blaze) - odmiana na głowie końskiej, która jest podłużną białą plamą idącą od czoła aż pomiędzy nozdrza, albo idąc definicją Wincentego Pola  zwana łysina szeroką(ang. Bald face)- plama mogła sięgać i przechodzić za oczy czy brwi etc (  ta ostatnia nie była pochwalana przez autora Hippiki Dorohostajskiego ani przez piszącego ponad dwa wieki później Pola).
