Native of New York, American painter Samuel Edgar Paxson (1852-1919) was a Montana pioneer, adventurer, settler, and US soldier during the brutal US war in the Philippines, was a survivor and injured in process of the Army naval transport ship wrecking outside Japan - here his short biography from the Montana Historical Society or University of Montana site.

Gilcrerase museum of Oklahoma City has a great collection of the American Western art, including the art of William de la Montagne Cary. William de la Montagne Cary and his art belong to the category of the early American painters of the American Trans-Mississippi frontier.
We should note that W.M Cary, born June 30, 1840, made his first excursion into the Trans-Mississippi West in 1861, way ahead of the likes of Russell, Paxson, Remington etc. During this trip on the Missouri River he visited and met the Yankton Sioux, Crow, Assinaboines, Red River Metis, Blackfeet etc.

I would like to point your horses towards this book on Archive - Edward Borein, cowboy artist; the life and works of John Edward Borein, 1872-1945 by Harold G. Davidson, The book is a fine biography and visual presentation of some of the magnificent work of Edward Ed Borein (1872-1945) had created during his life.

in 1873 two European-born illustrators and painters - Paul Frenzeny and Jules Tavernier - took a job of illustrating America from the East Coast to the West, working for the Harper's Magazine.
Tavernier even traveled to Red Cloud (named after the famous Oglala Lakota leader and goverment chief) Agency in Nebraska ( in fact he traveled there with military escort from Fort Robinson, a military post next to Red Cloud Agency, home to many thousands of the Lakotas, Cheyenne and Arapahoes. There Tavernier attended the annual Sun Dance ceremony, drew his vision of the ceremony and later on it was reproduced in Harper's in 1875(see below)
