Helmets with horses and horsemen

from the collections of American MET and Italian state museums come these objects with horse engraved, incised or repoussed on the bronze helmets.

South-central Crete , a late VII century BC bronze helmet with horses  created through the  repousse technique (with small lions incised). - from the MET.

the 500-450 BC helmet with incised horses, horseman and a groom (?) - perhaps Etruscan - from the collections of the Museo Archeologico Nazionale della Marche, Ancona.  From 'A cavallo del tempo exhibit' (2018).

 A fragment of a terracotta relief with two chariot (?) horses- late 6th century southern Italy (then Magna Graecia).

Finally, the ancient Greek armor,  a bronze belly guard  from theVII century Crete (the MET), from the same cache where the helmet was found.

Petasos - Thessalian horseman hat continued

 Salvete Omnes,

 

dog days of the summer (but there are wars and conflicts all over the Planet: Ukraine vs Rus. Federation and their respective allies, Horn of Africa, Syria, Palestine etc) - so let us continue with the petasos, their wide brimmed horseman hat.

 summer weekend  - and more ancient Thessalian horseman hat aka petasos imagery

 from the famous book  Art of Horsemanship by ancient horseman Xenophon of Athens come these  beautiful images of ancient  Athenian cavalrymen wearing petasos- a Thessalian hat. This American edition of Xenophon's work was translated by Morris H. Morgan, PhD, and published in Boston, MA, 1893AD.  Available on Archive to read, download and peruse.

I 'separated' these horsemen a bit for clarity sake, so if you want to use them as they are now, for your pleasure or whatever, do feel free to use it, as I used the original image from the book

Petasos - ancient Greek horseman hat

ancient Greek Petasos was perhaps the first wide brim hat for the horseman, huntsman and traveler, be it of felt, leather or even woven from plant fiber. 

 

It seems that petasos originated in ancient Thessaly and for centuries was part of the Thessalian horsemans's suite:
petasos hat, chlamys(and perhaps an exomis or khiton/chiton(tunic)  underneath), 1 spear, 2 javelins, long soft leather boots and sword/sabre or a short sword. The very headgear was used by horsemen in Magna Graecia (Italy eg Tarantine Greeks) , Macedonians, Athenians, and later was transported along with the general pilos hat and Macedonian kausia hat to Asia, as far as northern India and Central Asia - Bactria etc.

Horses & Riders of Gandhara

during the late Hellenistic age the northern ancient India, eastern Persia and the land beyond the Oxus & Jaxartes produced  a very specific melange of art styles and forms.

Gandhara is the lost  Shangrila of the ancient world, that is the region was this geopolitical and cultural area where Hellenistic (and older Near Eastern traditions) merged with the ancient Indian and Bactrian (Bactria was the Achaemenid Empire's jewel in the shah's crown) traditions.
so here I corralled some horse&rider-related images , that are finally available on Wiki, I have had most of them in my books and albums, but they were under the copyrights, nowadays they are freely available
