Great American photographer of horses and nature Robert Vavra (who passed away last Spring 2025) made a whole album-study on the horse behavior with many observations based on the Camargue horses - you can borrow it from Archive. (long time ago I bought a Spanish edition of this unique book).

The genetic similarities have been observed mainly with New Forest and Haflinger ponies, less with Barbs and Thoroughbreds, and the least with Arab horses.
https://horse-breeds.co.uk/breeds-of-horses/camargue-pferde/ Roman invaders noted the presence of these hardy horses when they arrived in the region. Over time, the Camargue horse developed its distinctive traits through natural selection. The harsh wetland environment shaped the breed’s toughness and stamina.
In the 16th century, local horse breeders began to take a more active role in shaping the Camargue breed. They focused on preserving its unique characteristics while improving its usefulness for working with Camargue bulls.
