I would like point your attention to the limited color palette known as the Anders Zorn palette (known as Apelles palette) - yellow ochre, vermilion red/cadmium medium red, ivory black and white (lead or titanium white).
James Gurney did a post about this concept, background and its application - here is maestro Gurney's demonstration in gouache.
